Injury Time


Injury Time:

Andrew Cole will have to wait for his Sunderland debut.The former Manchester United striker has a calf injury and will not feature against Reading at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.Cole, 36, got the injury while playing for the Reserves at Everton last week. He had hoped to play against the Royals.Roy Keane, Sunderland's manager, said: "Coley will be out for the next few games."Keane faces mounting injury problems as he starts to think about picking his team to play Reading.Cole (calf), Dean Whitehead (knee), Carlos Edwards (hamstring), Stanislav Varga (knee) and Kieran Richardson (back) are out, while Nyron Nosworthy (knee), Danny Collins (ankle), Kenwyne Jones (calf), Graham Kavanagh (thigh) and Russell Anderson (ankle) are doubts.

Varga faces an operation.Keane said: "Big Stan is having an operation and could be out for two or three months depending on what they find when they go in [to his knee].
"The Sunderland manager will be glad to welcome back today the club's trio of players who have been away on international duty for the last 10 days.Craig Gordon (Scotland) and Paul McShane (Ireland) played in Euro 2008 qualifiers last night while Daryl Murphy (Ireland) was an unused substitute.Keane added: "We're down to the bare numbers on the training pitch. We had three away on [international] duty and a few injured."We have to try to focus on the lads who are fit ... and there's six of them! We're having plenty of three-v-threes out on the training pitch."We've picked up some serious injuries to important players and that's been a blow but we just get on with it, we'll be ready for Saturday."
